Judging Digital TV Signal quality by viewing pictures can deceive. With perfect pictures, total loss of service can be closer than it seems!

Because of the nature of digital transmission pictures will degrade very quickly. Because this space between degradation is so small, it is sometimes referred to as the "cliff effect".

There is a high margin for error built DVB signals however, once the signal reachs the "cliff edge" expect a total picture loss.

The recommended level for signals to avoid the cliff effect are as follows.

  • CH BER E-04
  • PV-BER E-08
  • MER >/= 25dB
